World Building - 7/21/03 - 11:35 pm
For those of you who make worlds with your languages, check out the Fantasy World Builders Forum links. The demographics links are particularly interesting.

More Languages Made Than In The 1990s - 7/10/03 - 5:20 pm
The Model Languages database currently lists 174 languages that were started in the 1990s. We've just passed that number for the 2000s. In three and a half years we equaled the output of a decade. It's amazing how quickly language making is expanding.

Language Quickening - 7/09/03 - 6:08 pm
Tim Burns writes, "I am interested in creating a Naming Language for a fantasy story I plan to work on soon, but I was wondering how long constructing such a work would take. The story will only be around 10 pages long, and while it may have sequels, I don't want making the language to take longer than writing the story." You can create your own naming language in an hour. Check out this article on "how to invent a naming language".

Langmaker/Win Support Blues - 7/04/03 - 6:20 pm
A number of people have written in for tech support on Langmaker/Win. The software is no longer supported. I can't provide free technical support for a free product -- I'm just too busy. If you encounter a bug, I can't help you, as the company that made the spreadsheet I used no longer has a royalty-free license for their latest versions (in other words, I'd have to pay them money for each user, if I did a revision). I'd take this program down altogether (I don't link to it from anywhere else), but the program does work sometimes for some people on some systems. Check the other langmaking software I point to. OK, one last tip: make sure to download Langm111.exe and use that instead of version 1.0.9 (included in the main download).

Newest English - 7/02/03 - 2:16 pm
Ignatius_Version_2 asked, "Are there any examples of conlangs based on English in the deep future? I know of Nadsat and the list of New English words, but I would like to find a conlang based on the idea of a future English a thousand or two thousand years from now, a language that is to English what French is to Latin. I have constructed some of my own attempts (I suspect they're not as realistic as I would have them be) and I want to compare with other conlangers. Can you help me?" Yes, Futurese by Justin B. Rye is exactly what you are looking for: American English as it might be in 3000 AD. OK, so 997 years in the future instead of 1000!

Quenching Thirst for Quenya - 7/01/03 - 5:43 pm
Caraline Stock wrote, "Hi. I'm interested in learning the language of the elves from the Lord of the Rings. Is it true that there are books available to teach the language or an Elven dictionary or something?! If so, do you know were I could find one or where I should look to buy them." Tolkien's Elvish is known as Quenya (check that page for links to lessons). From my understanding, most of the books published are out of date or inaccurate, and you are best advised to use web resources, such as the ELFLING mailing list. Make sure to read their FAQ!
