Interlinear Translation 1Earth the all now had language one and words the same.
Translation 2As people moved from east the, they found plain a in land the of Shinar and lived there.
Translation 3And they said to other each, "Come, we make bricks, and well burn them." And they had bricks for stone, and bitumen for mortar.
Translation 4Then, they said, "Come, we build for us city a, and tower a with top the of it in heavens the, and we make name a for us, if we are spaced, over face the of earth the all."
Translation 5And, lord the downwardly came to see city the, and tower the, that children the of man built.
Translation 6And, lord the said, "Look, they are people one, and they all have language one, and this is beginning the only of that that they will do. And nothing, that they decide to do now will be impossible for them.
Translation 7Come, we downwardly go and confuse language the of them, so that they shall understand shall not language the of other each.
Translation 8So, lord the spaced them from there, over face the of earth the, and they stopped building city the.
Translation 9And, for that, name of it was called Babel, as over there lord the confused language the of earth the all. And from there, lord the spaced them, over face the of earth all.
English Paraphrase 1Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.
Paraphrase 2And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
Paraphrase 3And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.
Paraphrase 4Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth."
Paraphrase 5And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built.
Paraphrase 6And the Lord said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
Paraphrase 7Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech."
Paraphrase 8So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.
Paraphrase 9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.
Notes 1The Matsui text is not capitalised in any way, but the English retranslated text is. This is because English itself uses capitalisation. Additionally, this is why I didn't bother putting the particles in the retranslated English. English just doesn't have them.
Notes 2Lord" is not viewed as a proper noun because of the use of "the." In Matsui, it is like saying, "the god.
