| Introduction | In approximately 1880 Ludwig Zamenhof created the language Esperanto, intending it as a second language for everyone in the world. He attempted to make it very easy to learn, and culturally neutral. He translated a number of well-known texts as examples, including the entire Old Testament. A growing number of people learned to speak it; estimates of the number of speakers today worldwide range from 2,000,000 to 6,000,000. |
