Interlinear Translation 1Then whole-earth one language and one speech.
Translation 2And from-east they-journey and Shinar in-land plain it-find-they and there they-dwell.
Translation 3And man to-man he-says: "Do, brick them-make-we and totally them-burn-we." And brick stone it-for-them-is and slime bitumen it-for-them-is
Translation 4And they-say: "Do, city it-build-we tower-and its-top sky it-touches-it; and our-name it-to-us-give-we as-to whole-earth's its-to-surface us-not-scatters-he and we-are-far."
Translation 5And Lord he-comes-down city tower-and to-see man's his-child them-have-built-they.
Translation 6And Lord he-says: "Then, one people they-are and to-all one language-is, and this it-do-they they-begin; and now nothing it-want-they it-not-hampers.
Translation 7Go, go-down, and there their-language it-jumble-up so-that this-one that-one's his-speech it-not-understands-he."
Translation 8Then Lord thence whole-earth's it-to-surface them-scatters-he and they-are-far; and city it-build-they they-cease.
Translation 9For-that Babel it-is-called because there Lord whole-earth's its-language it-jumbles-up-he; and Lord thence whole-earth's its-surface them-scatters-he and they-are-far.
English Paraphrase 1Then the whole earth [was] one language and one speech.
Paraphrase 2And from East they journeyed and in the land of Shinar they found a plain and they dwelt there.
Paraphrase 3And man said to [another] man: "Let's go, let's make bricks and burn them totally." And bricks were stones for them and slime was bitumen for them.
Paraphrase 4And they said: "Let's go, let's build a city and tower which top will touch the sky; and let's give us a name so that we won't be scattered away on the whole earth's face."
Paraphrase 5And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the children of man had built.
Paraphrase 6And the Lord said: "Now, they are one people and they have one language, and this [is how] they began to act; and now, nothing will hamper them doing what they want.
Paraphrase 7Come on, let's go down and let's jumble there their language so that one can't understand the other."
Paraphrase 8Then the Lord scattered them away from there to the whole earth's surface; and they ceased building the city.
Paraphrase 9Therefore Babel it is called, because there the Lord jumbled up the language of the whole earth; and the Lord scattered them away from there to the whole earth's surface.
