Verse 1 Og hell landúr vær önn telen og öllmennan orðen. Verse 2 Og vær témeð se fra Östi venden, tém se flák vonden, en landi av Skin’ar, og þéren vönðen se. Verse 3 Og ann mann ságðe ti ander: “Kommtu! Ve skalen að býgmeðera að make, og að bakke sem.” Og se hetten sím stejni býgmeðering, og sím meðeri tjar. Verse 4 Og se ságðen: “Kommtu! Ve skalen að borg fýr veg að fýrbygge, og babel og köft hýn en himnej, og ve skalen að napn fýr veg að make, hvífýr ve dröjfið oven anlitt hell Erðím verðen.” Verse 5 Og Guð kám tunden að bórg og babel, hvað sonnen Mönnum fýrbyggðe hetten, að söje. Interlinear Translation 1 And whole the-land was one language and common words. Translation 2 And [it] was while they from the-East went, when they a-plain found, in the-land of Shin’ar, and there lived they. Translation 3 And one person said to another: “Come-you! We shall bricks make, and bake them.” And they had as stone bricks, and as material tar. Translation 4 And they said: “Come-you! We shall a-city for us build, and a-tower and the-head of-her in the-sky, and we shall a-name for us make, lest we scattered over the-face whole of-the-Earth become.” Translation 5 And God came down the-city and the-tower, what/that the-sons of-Man built had, to see. Translation 6 And God said: “See-you! One nation, and [there] is one language to them all, and this have they to do begun. And now, shall it not denied become, all, what/that they to do conspire. Translation 7 Come-you! Down shall we go, and we shall the-language of-them confuse, then one man may not the-language of an other understand.” Translation 8 And God scattered them from-there over the-face whole of-the-Earth, and they stopped the-city to build. Translation 9 Therefore is-called she [the-city] “Babel”, because there confused God the-language whole of-the-Earth, and Gud scattered them from-there over the-face whole of-the-Earth. English Paraphrase 1 And the whole land was one language and common words. Paraphrase 2 And it was while they were travelling from the East that they found a plain, in the land of Shin’ar, and there they lived. Paraphrase 3 And one man said to another: “Come! We shall make bricks, and bake them.” And they had bricks as stone, and tar as material. Paraphrase 4 And they said: “Come! We shall build for us a city, and a tower and its head in the sky, and we shall make a name for ourselves, lest we are scattered over the face of the whole Earth. Paraphrase 5 And God came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Man had built. Paraphrase 6 And God said: “See! One nation, and there is one language for them all, and this they have begun to do. And now, it will not be denied, all that they plot to do. Paraphrase 7 Come! We shall go down, and we shall confuse their language, that one man may not understand the language of another.” Paraphrase 8 And God scattered them thence over the face of the whole Earth, and they stopped building the city. Paraphrase 9 Therefore it [the city] was called “Babel”, for there God confused the language of the whole Earth, and scattered them thence over the face of the whole Earth. Notes 1 The definite article is expressed using different stems and endings. Here, “landúr” = “the land”, indefinite: “lend” = “(a) land”. “Önn” (“one”) is feminine, as numbers 1-4 agree in gender. Notes 2 “av” is usually missed out, and an ending put on the noun instead. However, “Skin’ar” is indeclinable. Note that “sk” is pronounced like English “sh”. Notes 3 “að” (“to”, “that”, “in order to”, etc.) is used a lot, and is sometimes doubled up if two verbs in a sentence are separated. Notes 4 The word “bablár, babel” (“tower”, “skyscraper”) comes from this story. Notes 6 “Tisámðenke” (“plot”) from “tisám” (“together”) and the impersonal verb “ðenke” (“think”).
