English Paraphrase 1 | The whole planet spoke the same language, using the same words. |
Paraphrase 2 | While people traveled in the east, they discovered a valley in Shinar, and moved there. |
Paraphrase 3 | They said to each other, "Let's mold bricks and harden them with fire." They used bricks as stone, and slime as mortar. |
Paraphrase 4 | Then they said, "Let's build ourselves a city and a tower with its top up in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered all over the planet." |
Paraphrase 5 | The god came down to see the city and the tower that the people had built. |
Paraphrase 6 | Then he said, "If now, while they are one people, all speaking the same language, they have started to do this, nothing will later stop them from doing whatever they want." |
Paraphrase 7 | We should go down and confuse their language so they won't be able to understand each other. |
Paraphrase 8 | Thus the god scattered them from there all over the planet, and they stopped building the city. |
Paraphrase 9 | That is why it was called Babel: because there the god confused the speech of all the world. It was from there that he scattered them all over the planet. |
