English Paraphrase 1 | Now all of Earth had one language and one dialect. |
Paraphrase 2 | And while journeying from the East, it came to pass that they found land in Shinar, and they dwelt there. |
Paraphrase 3 | Then they said to each other, "Come, enable us to make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They had brick for stone and asphalt for mortar. |
Paraphrase 4 | And they said, "Come, enable us to build ourselves a city, and a tower that reaches the heavens; enable us to make ourselves a name, in case we are scattered across all of Earth." |
Paraphrase 5 | But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of man had built. |
Paraphrase 6 | And the LORD said, "Yes the people are one and have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now none of what they propose to do will be withheld from them. |
Paraphrase 7 | Come, enable us to go down and confuse their language, so that they are unable to understand each other's dialect." |
Paraphrase 8 | And so the LORD scattered them across all of Earth, and they stopped builing the city. |
Paraphrase 9 | And so, they call it Babel, because the LORD confused the language of all of Earth; and from there the LORD scattered them across all of Earth. |
