Interlinear Translation 1Now, it-existed language one world[loc.] whole[n./loc.] with way-speak one.
Translation 2When eastwards[separative]* journeyed-they, found-they plain[acc.] Shinar land[loc.] in and made-they it[acc.] home[dat.].
Translation 3And said-they themselves[acc.]: Begin-fresh, let-us-make bricks[acc.] and let-us-burn thoroughly them[acc.]! And used-they bricks stones instead-of and loam morter instead-of.
Translation 4And said-they: Begin-fresh, let-us-build city[acc.] with tower[acc.], whose heaven[acc.] part uppermost[neut.] touch-it-shall[fut.], for name[acc.] ourselves[dat.] to make; because not-if, scattered-we-will-be lands[metative] all[n./pl./metative]* world[loc.] whole[n./loc.].
Translation 5And went-it[abstract] down[metative] LORD, for city[acc.] with tower[acc.], that[n./pl./acc.] children-men building-were, to see.
Translation 6And said-it[abstract] LORD: See[3.pers.pl./imp.], it-exists people one and speaks-it[abstract] whole[abstract] language[acc.] one and this-acting beginning acting-of their[demonstrative]; from-now-on, will-be-restrained-them-from not to can every-acting[akk.], that-to-do they-have-decided.
Translation 7Begin-fresh, let-us-go down[metative] and let-us-mix-up language[acc.] their[demostrative], so-that not will-somebody-understand somebody[acc.] else[acc.].
Translation 8Because-of-that[demonstrative], scattered-it[abstract] LORD them[acc./demonstrative] lands[metative] all[n./pl./metative] world[loc.] whole[n./loc.], so-that had-they[demonstrative] to break-off city-construction[acc.].
Translation 9Because-of-that, it-is-called Babel, because mixed-up-it[abstract] LORD language[acc.] lands-of all[n./pl.] there and scattered-it[abstract] LORD them[acc./demonstrative] lands[metative] all[n./pl./metative] world[loc.] whole[n./loc.] there[origotive]*.
English Paraphrase 1Now, there was one language with one way of speaking in the whole world.
Paraphrase 2When they journeyed eastwards, they found a plain in the land Shinar and they made it their home.
Paraphrase 3And they said one to another: Go to, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly! And they used bricks instead of stones and loam instead of morter.
Paraphrase 4And they said: Go to, let us build a city with a tower whose uppermost part shall touch the heaven, to make ourselves a name; because if not we will be scattered over all lands in the whole world.
Paraphrase 5And the LORD went down to see the city with the tower, that the children of men were building.
Paraphrase 6And the LORD said: Behold, there is one people and the whole of it speaks one language and this is the beginning of their acting; from now on every acting, that they have decided to do, will not to can be restrained from them.
Paraphrase 7Go to, let us go down and let us mix up their language, so that somebody does not understand somebody else.
Paraphrase 8Therefore the LORD scattered them over all lands in the whole world, so that they had to break off the construction of the city.
Paraphrase 9Therefore, it is called Babelm because the LORD mixed up there the language off all lands and the LORD scattered them from there over all lands in the whole world.
Notes 2*The Kizion language has a case that is called 'separative'. It gives the direction of something, like 'along the road'.
Notes 4*There is also another unusual case, called 'metative'. He gives the destination of a movement.
Notes 9*A third unusual case is the 'origotive', that says you the origin of a movement.
