Interlinear Translation 1Now, one-language and common speech whole world had.
Translation 2As westward people moved, in Shinar, plain they found and there they-settled.
Translation 3To each other they-said, "Come, bricks we-will make, and them-bake thorough." Brick for stone they-used, and tar for mortar they-used.
Translation 4Then, they-said, "Come, for us a city we-will build, with tower to heavens, so name for us we-will make, and over whole earth not scattered we-will be.
Translation 5But down Lord came, to see city and tower men built.
Translation 6Lord said, "If same language speaking people this do-begun, then for them no plan impossible will be.
Translation 7Come, down we go, and their language we-confuse, so each other they-understand-won't."
Translation 8And from there to whole world them Lord scattered, and their city building they-stopped.
Translation 9Reason that is, Babel it-was called- because there, whole world's language Lord confused and over whole earth people Lord scattered.
English Paraphrase 1Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
Paraphrase 2As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
Paraphrase 3They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
Paraphrase 4Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
Paraphrase 5But the Lord camedown to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
Paraphrase 6The Lord said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
Paraphrase 7Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
Paraphrase 8So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Paraphrase 9That is why it was called Babel -- because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
