Language SubtitleThe language of Sorukan
Year2003
TranslatorDaniel S. Andersen
IntroductionThis language is a project I've been working on for about a year. It has some prefixes like Arabic, some Spanish-looking suffixes (but not the same meaning!), and capitalized nouns like German. The word order is VSO, and I have a word list of about 250 (not counting grammar conjunctions and whatnot) at the time of this writing.
Verse 1re si can yatal al-Sorucana fuia da-Lano u da-Lanco.
Verse 2ral jetali Laia wur al-Ovuano, antlali Laia Wuflo jes Shinar-jouan, sicna sali Laia sin.
Verse 3lacali Laia "yasali Naia Jofijio u cutoli Sano fuito." u yatali Laia Jofijo sic Jeuo, u Esfino.
Verse 4lacali Laia "yasoli Naia Sorano u Shevano, wunoli sir Fuino Cuoto. u yafoli Naia Sinto sic Naia, utu tesholi Laia vet at al-Joleo oc al-Sorucano fuio."
Verse 5anralc Ji'hanjua al-Sorano u al-Shevano, si yasali al-Sicania.
Verse 6lacalc Ji'hanjua "af, codareli al-Silia, u yatali Laio fuio da-Lano, u yaseli Laio Seco. ral cofulel Seco, coacanol Toca wur Sano."
Verse 7lolonc Naca Laioco Lano, ic tococoli Laia eba Lanoc.
Verse 8sicna, yafalc wur sim Ji'hanjua Laio at al-Joleo oc al-Sorucano. teshali yasor Laia al-Sorano.

Translation 4said(3pl) we(sub) city(obj) and tower(obj), will-reach(3>pl) whose top(sub) heaven(obj). and will-make(3>pl) we(sub) name(obj) for we(sub), or will-be-scattered(3>pl) we(sub) far on the-surface(obj) of the-earth(obj)-whole(obj)."
Translation 5saw(3
Translation 6said(3
Translation 7will-confuse(1=male) i(sub) their-(poss) language, so will-not-understand(neg3>pl) they(sub) each other's speech(obj poss).
Translation 8thus, scattered(3<) from there Ji'hanju(sub) them(obj) on the-surface(obj) of the-earth(obj). departed(3<) to build they(sub) the-city(obj).
Translation 9thus is(3=) its name Babel(sub), because there confused(3<) Ji'hanju(sub) the-language(obj) of the-earth(obj) whole(obj), and scattered(3<) from there he(3m)(sub) them(3pl)(obj) far on the-surface(obj) of the-earth(obj).
English Paraphrase 1At that time, all the world had one language and one speech.
Paraphrase 2As they journeyed from the east, they found a plain in Shinar-land, therefore they dwelt there.
Paraphrase 3They said, "We will make bricks and burn them fully." And they had brick for stone, and mortar.
Paraphrase 4They said, "We will build a city and a tower, whose top will reach heaven. And we will make a name for us, or we will be scattered far on the surface of the whole earth."
Paraphrase 5Ji'hanju saw the city and the tower, that the children of men built.
Paraphrase 6Ji’hanju said, "O, the people are united, and they all have one language, and they build this. if this is done, nothing will be kept from them."
Paraphrase 7I will confuse their language, so they will not understand each other's speech.
Paraphrase 8Thus Ji’hanju scattered them far on the surface of the earth from there. they departed to build the city.
Paraphrase 9Thus its name is Babel, because Ji’hanju there confused the language of the whole earth, and he scattered them far on the surface of the earth from there.
Notes 5Note that "Ji'hanju" is the word used here for "the LORD". This is because Ji'hanju is the deity of my conworld Sorukan in the mythology. For more information, go to my website.
Notes 6"coacanol" means "will be kept". -ol is the 3rd person, future conjuncton, and acan is the base meaning "keep". co- is the prefix for "to be ---".
