Interlinear Translation 1Was all the land of one mouth; was one speech to every man.
Translation 2Then traveled mankind to the east; found they a field in the land 'Shinar'; settled they there.
Translation 3Then said they one to his neighbors, "Come, make will we bricks; bake will we them with fire." Were the bricks as their stone; was bitumen as their binding together.
Translation 4Then said they, "Come, build will we for us a city together with a 'migdol', which will touch its pyramidion to heaven. Make will we for us a name before scattered are we on face of the land.
Translation 5Then descended Lord to see the city together with the 'migdol' which built the sons of mankind.
Translation 6Then said the Lord, "Behold, begun have they to do this as one people of one mouth; forthwith not cease will they to complete that which plan they to do.
Translation 7Come, descend will we to confuse their mouth, so that not will know one the voice of his neighbors."
Translation 8Then scattered the Lord them thence on face of the land; ceased they to build the city together with the 'migdol'.
Translation 9Forthwith called was its name confusion, because confused the Lord the mouth of all the land there; scattered the Lord them on face of the land.
Notes 4(P.S. I could not find a good native Egyptian word for 'tower', but the borrowing from Hebrew 'migdol' is attested.)
