Interlinear Translation 1 | Was all the land of one mouth; was one speech to every man. |
Translation 2 | Then traveled mankind to the east; found they a field in the land 'Shinar'; settled they there. |
Translation 3 | Then said they one to his neighbors, "Come, make will we bricks; bake will we them with fire." Were the bricks as their stone; was bitumen as their binding together. |
Translation 4 | Then said they, "Come, build will we for us a city together with a 'migdol', which will touch its pyramidion to heaven. Make will we for us a name before scattered are we on face of the land. |
Translation 5 | Then descended Lord to see the city together with the 'migdol' which built the sons of mankind. |
Translation 6 | Then said the Lord, "Behold, begun have they to do this as one people of one mouth; forthwith not cease will they to complete that which plan they to do. |
Translation 7 | Come, descend will we to confuse their mouth, so that not will know one the voice of his neighbors." |
Translation 8 | Then scattered the Lord them thence on face of the land; ceased they to build the city together with the 'migdol'. |
Translation 9 | Forthwith called was its name confusion, because confused the Lord the mouth of all the land there; scattered the Lord them on face of the land. |
Notes 4 | (P.S. I could not find a good native Egyptian word for 'tower', but the borrowing from Hebrew 'migdol' is attested.) |
