Interlinear Translation 1in that time, the world whole [it] had language one.
Translation 2as men [they] moved toward the east, they found a plain in Shinar and they settled in that place.
Translation 3they said to them, "we will make bricks and we will bake them thoroughly." They used bricks in the place of stone and tar in the place of mortar.
Translation 4they said then, "we will build for us a city, with a [great] tower that [it] reaches to the heavens so we will be able to make for us a name and [to] be not scattered on the world."
Translation 5but the Lord [it] came to see the city and the [great] tower that the men [they] were building.
Translation 6the Lord said, "if they have begun to do this [it] as people unified, [no it] [it] will be not possible for them.
Translation 7we will go to them and we will confuse their language so they will not understand them."
Translation 8so the Lord [it] scattered them on the earth whole, and they stopped building the city.
Translation 9that [it] [it] is why [it] was named Babel – because the Lord [it] confused the language of the world whole. From there the Lord scattered them on the world whole.
English Paraphrase 1In that time, the whole world had one language.
Paraphrase 2As men moved toward the east, they found a plain in Shinar and they settled in that place.
Paraphrase 3They said to each other, "We will make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used bricks in place of stone and tar in place of mortar.
Paraphrase 4Then they said, "We will build for us a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens so we will be able to make for us a name and not be scattered over the world."
Paraphrase 5But the Lord came to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
Paraphrase 6The Lord said, "If they have begun to do this as a unified people, nothing will be impossible for them.
Paraphrase 7We will go to them and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
Paraphrase 8So the Lord scattered them over the whole world, and they stopped building the city.
Paraphrase 9That is why it was named Babel – because the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over whole world.
