Site LanguageEnglish
Language Typeprofessional fictional language
UniquenessThe language of Klaatu was used in the 1951 classic movie, The Day The Earth Stood Still, one of the first movies to ever include a constructed language. The language consists of about 50 words derived from Terran languages, and the phrase "Klaatu barada necto" has become something of a catch-phrase among science-fiction fans, often alluded to in other works (e.g., the Klaatu Nebula in Galaxy Quest).
Language SourcesLatin, French, English, Greek, ciphers and transposition code.
Interest Of OthersThe author of the language is assumed to be the author of the screenplay, Edmund H. North, since the novella the screenplay was based on, "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates, didn't include the language.
