Interlinear Translation 1The World one language, one tongue.
Translation 2The people traveled [long ago] from the east, the people found [long ago]swift earth in Shinar, the people dwelt [long ago].
Translation 3The people spoke [long ago] "Make [future] brick, burn [future] brick." Brick as rock, slime as mortar.
Translation 4The people spoke [long ago], "Make [future] city, the mightiest building, divine gate; people famous, not scattered [future] throughout The World."
Translation 5God traveled [long ago] to the city, to the building, the people made [past].
Translation 6God spoke "The people one, one language; this [approximately] make [future]; nothing the people not make [future]."
Translation 7Travel [future] to the city, scatter [future] from the language, people not understand [future] tongues [Plural is not explicitly indicated, but the context shows that it should be plural].
Translation 8God scattered [long ago] the people throughout The World; the people not make [future] to the city.
Translation 9Babel given [long ago] to the city [as a name]; God scattered [long ago] from the language: God scattered [long ago] the people throughout The World.
English Paraphrase 1The World had one language and one speech.
Paraphrase 2The people traveled from the east, they found land [that would grow crops quickly and often] in Shinar, and they dwelt there.
Paraphrase 3And they said "Let us make bricks and burn them." They used bricks as rock and slime as mortar.
Paraphrase 4They said, "Let us build a city and the tallest building will be the gate to heaven. Let us become famous so that we won't be scattered throughout The World.
Paraphrase 5God came to the city and to the building the people had built.
Paraphrase 6God said, "The people is one and they have one language. Because they will do this, there is nothing they cannot do."
Paraphrase 7Let us go to the city and confound the language, so that they will not understand each others speech.
Paraphrase 8God scattered the people throughout The World and they no longer continued to build the city.
Paraphrase 9The city was called Babel because God confounded the language and scattered the people throughout The World.
Notes 7In Proto Source it isn't clear if God is ordering a group to do this for him or if he goes with them. Plural is not explicitly indicated on "tounge", but it's clear from context.
