English Paraphrase 1At first, everyone spoke the same language
Paraphrase 2but after some of them came from the east, and settled in Shinar (babylon),
Paraphrase 3and said, "Let us build a city with a tower that reaches to the sky! We will use hard bricks and tar instead of stone and brick.
Paraphrase 4We will be famous, and we will not be scattered all over the earth."
Paraphrase 5But when the Great Lord came down to look at the city with the tower,
Paraphrase 6and said, "These men are only working together because they speak the same language. This is only the beginning. Soon they will be able to do anything they want to.
Paraphrase 7Come on! Let us go down and confuse them by making them speak different languages-Then they will not be able to understand each other."
Paraphrase 8So the men had to stop building the city, because the Great Lord confused their language. And then they were scattered all over the earth.
Paraphrase 9This is how the city of Babel got its name.
Notes 3* ker means mortar, so in this instance unker means not mortar, so ker is used in place of tar, and unker in place of mortar, so as to make a distinction between the two.
