Interlinear Translation 1 | First at, everyone the same language spoke, |
Translation 2 | but after some of them from the east came, and in Shinar settled, |
Translation 3 | and said: "Let us a city with a tower that reaches to the sky build! We will hard bricks and tar instead of stone and mortar use. |
Translation 4 | We will famous be, and we will not be all over the world scattered. |
Translation 5 | But when the Great Lord came down to at the city with the tower look, |
Translation 6 | he said: "These men are together working only because they all speak the same language. This only the beginning is. Soon they will be able to anything they want do. |
Translation 7 | On come! Let us go down and confuse them by making them different languages speak- then they will not be able to each other understand. |
Translation 8 | So the men the city had to stop building, because the Great Lord their language confused, and then they were all over the earth scattered. |
Translation 9 | This is how the city of [the place of] Confusion (babel) its name got. |
English Paraphrase 1 | At first, everyone spoke the same language |
Paraphrase 2 | but after some of them came from the east, and settled in Shinar (babylon), |
Paraphrase 3 | and said, "Let us build a city with a tower that reaches to the sky! We will use hard bricks and tar instead of stone and brick. |
Paraphrase 4 | We will be famous, and we will not be scattered all over the earth." |
Paraphrase 5 | But when the Great Lord came down to look at the city with the tower, |
Paraphrase 6 | and said, "These men are only working together because they speak the same language. This is only the beginning. Soon they will be able to do anything they want to. |
Paraphrase 7 | Come on! Let us go down and confuse them by making them speak different languages-Then they will not be able to understand each other." |
Paraphrase 8 | So the men had to stop building the city, because the Great Lord confused their language. And then they were scattered all over the earth. |

Notes 3 | * ker means mortar, so in this instance unker means not mortar, so ker is used in place of tar, and unker in place of mortar, so as to make a distinction between the two. |
