Interlinear Translation 1 | And the entire earth was of one language/tongue, one speaking. |
Translation 2 | And so it came that, as from is traveled, in Sinar they found a plain, and there dwelt. |
Translation 3 | And one to another they said, Go to, let us make bricks, and let us completely bake them. And for stone they had bricks, and for mortar they had pitch. |
Translation 4 | And they said, Go to, let us erect city and tower, the which head to the heavens shall reach: and let us name ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the entire earth. |
Translation 5 | And jhvh (The Lord) descended to behold city and tower, that the sons of man constructed. |
Translation 6 | And said jhvh (The Lord), behold, one people, and has one language, and this they begin to do: and which they imagine to do, nothing shall restrain them. |
Translation 7 | Go to, let us descend, and there this language let us confuse: that not one to other speaking may they understand. |
Translation 8 | So jhvh (The Lord) dispersed from there upon the face of all the earth: and ended the city building. |
Translation 9 | So the name is named Babel, for jhvh (The Lord) there confused the language of all the earth: and from there jhvh (The Lord) dispersed over the face of all the earth. |
English Paraphrase 1 | And the whole earth was of one language, one speech. |
Paraphrase 2 | And so it happened, that as they went forth, in Sinar they found a plain, and there abode. |
Paraphrase 3 | And one to another, they said, Very well, we'll make bricks, and bake them through. And for stone they had bricks, and for mortar they had pitch. |
Paraphrase 4 | And they said, Very well, we will build a city and a tower, which shall stretch to heaven; and we will name ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the entire earth. |
Paraphrase 5 | And the Lord descended, to see the city and the tower the sons of men built. |
Paraphrase 6 | And the Lord said, look, it is one people, having one language, and see what they have begun to do; and whatever they imagine to do, nothing will stop them. |
Paraphrase 7 | Very well, we shall go down, and there confuse this language, that they may not understand each other's speech. |
Paraphrase 8 | So the Lord scattered them from there over the face of all the earth; and the city-building ended. |
Paraphrase 9 | So it is called Babel, for the Lord there confused the language of all the earth; and the Lord scattered them over the face of all the earth. |
