EditorialHarrison is approaching the design of Vorlin very professionally, and you can read his opinions about the requirements of an international language in an excellent essay on his web site. Harrison is the editor of the Journal Of Planned Languages and has prepared a detailed bibliography of constructed languages. He is arguably the foremost scholar of constructed languages working on the Internet today. Vorlin is most noted for its use of words with three letters for its base vocabulary. The language has changed significantly over the years and still has far to go, as Harrison restructures its vocabulary. This site is worth checking out periodically.
UniquenessVorlin has some interesting words: the basic sense of the word bat is "a ball-hitting tool", with its radiated meanings including "bat, hockey stick, and tennis racket", while the word sop means "soup" and "stew". Other Vorlin words cover a smaller range of meanings, so that for, "form, shape", does not include other senses of English form like "a paper document to be filled in", "a molding to be filled with concrete" or "manners or conduct".
Design PrinciplesRick writes, "Vorlin is a constructed human language (which might also be called an artificial language or a planned language, depending on your taste in terminology). The central idea of the project is vor, our word for "a compromise between technical and aesthetic criteria," in other words, the avoidance of extremism in the design of things; an attempt to blend art with appropriate technology."
